AX Intelligent Data Management Tool : Inside look

After a few hitches I've managed finally to get the IDMF started up and running and the results are pretty nice. One prerequisite is that you must have XRef done on your DB (Production :-(). Also during the post install steps watch out for the windows application log coz that goes full and you have to clean it up. However after you complete the post install steps and have executed the batches, the results are nice. To avoid the XRef* tables occupy the top tables in terms of rows and size, do not run the full XRef, just XRef the data model. Here are some screens (Done on AX 2009 SP1; WIN 2003 R2SP2,SQL 2008 ENT).

Data Purging (Visual XRef):

The IDM is not for Production use and should be only used in a Sandbox/ Dev environment. This is a Pre Release version . The Production build will have some more features :) like application log control...
Happy DAXING :)

Hi Arijit,

Nice article (as usual). It's always good to get a - kind off - objective oppinion on the new stuff from MBS.

By the way - doesn't it say "This is a pre-release non production build." on the download page on PartnerSource ;-)

Hi Arijit,

you don't have to run the complete cross reference update. You only have to update the data model and type hierarchy. With that, the Xref tables won't be the biggest on the dashboard.

Good article on this new tool for Dynamics AX, those of us that have been working on AX for a while now know this is a long time coming. We are currently in the process of implementing it ourselves and are hoping to see positive results so that we can see a rolling DB footprint for our customers.

Hi Arijit,

We are trying to run IDM for our client. But facing problem in post installation checklist during snapshot analysis. It is failing every time with the error "Package InsIndexcaptureStats" failed. We are trying it on Win server 2003, Ax 4.0 and SQL server 2005. Any suggestion would be highly helpful.
